Guyana Wildlife Adventure
This adventure is designed for real nature and wildlife lovers. Featuring the nesting sites of Hawksbill, Leatherback, Green and Oliver Ridley Turtles and the Rupununi River with Giant River Otters, Black Caiman and Arapaima.
We set out from Georgetown embarking on a river trip along the Essequibo and Pomeroon Rivers to the Amerindian village of Santa Rosa. From Santa Rosa a three hour boat trip takes you through the Morouca savannahs and legendary Dark Bush, where the entire river is enclosed overhead by entwining and overhanging branches of the mangrove trees, and into the Barama River. Flocks of macaws can be seen, and as we enter the Waini River you may be accompanied by fresh water dolphins. Entering the Atlantic Ocean we reach our final destination of Almond Beach on the rugged coastline. Two nights are spent at Almond Beach with boating, fishing, treks to observe the Scarlet Ibis during the day and of course, at night locating the nesting sites of four of the worlds endangered turtle species. Local Wardens keep record of nesting sites and at times move the eggs to safer ground. Watching the turtles building the nest and laying is a moving experience.
After a brief break in Georgetown, the journey continues onto the Rupununi and Karanambu Ranch. Enjoy fishing at Guyana's best inland location, Simoni Pond, and visit Crane Pond to observe hundreds of Heron, Egret, Anhinga and Ibis roosting. Explore the Rupununi River in search of Black Caiman, Giant River Otters and Arapaima.
Available March to July.
