In Search of the Harpy Eagle

Sand Creek -Amerindian villageThe Harpy Eagle is the largest eagle in the world and lives up to its name the "flying wolf". With limited distribution and now on the endangered list the eagle still has a refuge in the deep south of Guyana. Inhabiting tall trees in thick rainforest it is often difficult to view the bird, however Amerindian communities are now locating nesting sites and protecting the eagle so that serious bird watchers and lovers of nature may experience the joy of a close sighting.

Working cattle at Dadanawa RanchAfter crossing the savannah from Lethem to Dadanawa Ranch there is an opportunity to bird along the banks of the Rupununi River. The following day we set out in an open backed jeep for the Amerindian villages on the forest edge to check out the location of active nesting sites. Depending on the location we will camp close to the village or in the forest itself, both offering good birding opportunities.

Traveling to the forest by four wheel driveBefore dawn we set out into the forest for the nesting site so we can observe the Harpy Eagle and chick. Previous sites have allowed numerous vantage points to observe the nest and activities of the birds. Other birding can be enjoyed in the area during periods of inactivity at the nest and a second visit can be planned for the following morning before returning to Dadanawa Ranch.

As with any trip involving wildlife it is impossible to guarantee a sighting, but all trips are taken to known active sites where previous sightings have been confirmed.
